Good gag, Roy -- I just wanted to get my two cents in, because a few weeks ago you wrote, and I quote: "Now I know someone is actually out there reading this trivial blog". I've had that feeling many times, so I want you to know that we are indeed out here, reading and laughing. -- Eli
You made my day - - I think the reason hardly anybody comments on ANYTHING on the internet is because it is STILL a fairly new invention and we all hear of slick scamming internet cafe type geeks from Nigeria phishing and stealing identities and lifting bank accounts and vital private information - - as time goes on, I think everybody slowly and gradually get the nerve to dive in - - Got a call yesterday from Dallas, an association wanted to use one of my cartoons from HBR for a powerpoint presentation, I said great, faxed her an invoice and that was that ! Amazing, there is more of this type of sales that didn't exist years ago. The Cartoon Bank does a tremendous amount on this type of sale. ( And so do a lot of other cartoonists ). Thanks for the comment, Eli, ( AND KEEP DOIN' WHAT YOU'RE DOIN ! )- - always good to hear from you. Sorry to hear of Bob Zahn's passing. He was a real pro journeyman cartoonist and his work was ubiquitous. I saw his work in the majors for years, way before me. I heard he was a real nice guy.
After graduating from Tucson High School in 1953 I attended the Billy Hon School of Cartooning in Los Angeles.
I then joined the U.S. Marines for four years, and ended up in Washington, D.C..
After getting honourably discharged, I enrolled at the Corcoran School of Art where I studied figure drawing.
In 1976 I founded and was CEO of a 34 man sign company specializing in Trade Show Decorations, Exhibits and Signage for the largest 100 Associations in the U.S. We later expanded and added an electrical sign division where we designed and manufactured electrical signs for many Fortune 500 companies.
The company was sold in 2oo2. I now draw cartoons passionately full-time from my mountain-top home and studio in wild & wonderful West Virginia.
My cartoons have appeared regularly in the Wall Street Journal, Barron's, Harvard Business Review, Reader's Digest, etc. and recently Playboy magazine where Mr. Hefner just purchased 15 colour cartoons in May and June of 2007.
