Roy Delgado Blog

Someone recently told me that after looking at my blog for a few months and taking note of my constant tedius never-ending monotnous "rants" of being rejected by the New Yorker over 20,000 times . . . he sent me this cartoon he saw somewhere of mine and he mailed it to me and said this is how it's getting to be reading my blog . . so, being a good listener as I am and digesting what he said AND noting that I have worried about beating a dead horse in the ground, I announce today that I will never utter a word about these rejections . . . no more rants . . wouldn't it be nice if everyone quit " ranting" ?( Except the people I agree with )

Actually, if editorial cartoonists were not allowed to rant in their drawings most of them would be out of business. And most of the cable talk show people on BOTH sides . . whether it's Rush Limbaugh OR Keith Olbermann would BOTH have to jump off a 10 story building . . . The obvious thing is of course, if you AGREE with that particular guy, it's not ranting, he's telling the truth . . . it's the OTHER guy who is ranting, because he is lying, right ?

Now, if only people would quit " RANTING " about MY rantings . . it would be a breath of fresh air . .

Roy-
It's your blog. You should be able to talk about what you want.

Hi Van -
Good point. My problem has always been is my delivery . . . I come off that way . . as I'm " ranting " . . it's happened before . . maybe it is from my time in the Marine Corps . . That is the way most Marine sergeants speak . . in a " rant " . . funny thing, it always works . . it never doesn't work . . ( getting your point across. )

I think the real problem lies in the fact that a lot of people are influenced so much by the style of DELIVERY of a messagenger rather than the actual content of the message itself.
Actually, all I'm really concerned or care about on cartooning\editor issues is the TRUTH.
If someone really doesn't like what a newspaper publishes or a blogger blogs, all they have to do is stop buying that newspaper or stop reading that blog. It's like the person who says: " I don't want to argue about it. " All you have to do if you don't want to argue about something is to shut up. You are actually arguing by saying you don't want to argue about it. Actually you want to have the last word, that's really what it's all about.
My favorite comedian is the character Frank Costanza of Seinfeld. That's the way I sound probably to a lot of people . . . I'm sorry, but that is what it is. With me, try sticking to my facts, rather than my " ranting ". Anything else is just a diversion.
Thank you, Van.

Van is right. It is YOUR blog and you can "rant" about what you please.

In my opinion (for what that's worth - not much -) when the rant stays the same for too long, it might get a little, well, not so fresh. New rants are always appreciated. I think we all rant from time to time.

Also, I think some folks (I'm guessing here) hate to see you beat yourself up about the NYer.
I've never been in the NYer. I guess it would be fun to have one in there, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it. I used to be in the Reader's Digest just about every issue, and sometimes 2, even THREE times in an issue. All of the sudden they don't pick my stuff anymore. I'm not going to lose sleep over it. I haven't changed anything. You just do what you do. Try your best and enjoy doing what you're doing.

For what it's worth (again, not much)...I'd put some new rants in there to spice it up. Spice is the variety of life.

Cartoonists usually have strong opinions, in my experience. Even the seeming non-ranting types. The opinion part of the mind is definitely connected to the imagination center of the brain by way of the lateral geniculate nucleus.

PS...I'm guessing I must have said something in my last post that you didn't like because you didn't post it.

Hi Dan,
Actually, after reading your comment . . I reread my opinion post and I felt stupid . . I really didn't like my own post ( rant ) after I re-read it, so I deleted the post AND the comment. Since I took back what I said, any comments would be irrelevant, period. ( i.e. I admitted I shot my mouth before giving it enough thought ) ( Sometimes, I imagine people comment or rebut something and later could suffer from the same dilemma, I guess that IS possible, isn't it ?)

I'm not that smart to say I've never regretted what I've done or said in my life. I could have very easily like Nixon "erased" those 17 seconds, or pretend that it was a "computer glitch " and that I never received your comment . . . I probably would have tried it if I thought I could get away eith it . . .

I think feedback is good if you want to be successful at anything, having said that, I, personally would rather people NOT look at my blog UNLESS they think they MIGHT learn something or other about what is happening here, or what I'm trying to espouse in ideas . .

I don't know about you, but I like to think of myself as a work in progress.

I think what I got a little irritated about, which is very common, is that in that in that particular rant, I made it clear that I wanted to have the comments addressed on the subject I was talking about and nothing else, please . . . AND then, the first comment goes on to talk about me, it is not about me, it was about the rejections going in at The New Yorker. I was merely trying to get a dialigue going . . . but most people are afraid to say what they really think about something like this because they are afraid to get criticized, I guess . . . Everything I have ever said or editorialized in a cartoon regarding the New Yorker was not intended as an "assault" on the magazine . . Hell, I'm trying to SELL cartoons to the magazine.

Not EVERYONE knows about my 20,000 rejections . . Do you really think "EVERYONE" knows ? EVERYONE ? EVERYONE is a lot of people.

I never thought to ask you...have you ever gone to a showing in person?
You may have said it at one point, but I don't remember.
