In his later years, after the comic was strong and going full blazes Bluto his nemesis appears, then because of ownership to the name Bluto, the almost identical brute appears but his name is now Brutus. Bluto/Brutus . . . same bully.

Remembering L.A.

This cartoon reminds me of an incident way back in 1953, while attending art school in LALA land - - - having always had an interest in photography, I got this great idea, I bought an inexpensive camera and feeling bold, one lazy nice balmy Sunday in November I took a bus deep into the bowels of Los Angeles - - - back then, the Cecil Hotel on Main street was about as far downtown it was safe to walk around in without either getting mugged or knifed, so I decided to walk slowly deeper into the abyss - - - I remember walking by Wall Street and I started to notice I was now looking straight at what I came looking for - - - people who were a couple or more notches down the socio-economic scale than I, people I had heard about, people I would see in the news i.e. - - - pan handlers, bums, drug dealers, winos, prostitutes, people with interesting faces who begged to tell you the string of bad luck they were on - - - who would make great black and white photo studies - - - back then that is how you would describe them, now, you would say you ran into some people who were homeless, destitute, disadvantaged, victims, disenfranchised - - - maybe it was the same thing, I don't know - - - all I knew is I felt and believed, for a moment, I was going to be the next Richard Avedon, Arthur Tcholakian, Gordon Parks or some other celebrated pulitzer-prize-winning world class photographer - - -

For a moment I was Walter Mitty fantasizing all of this - - - - then, POOF! - - - just before I was about to take my first photo shot of an unshaven poor wino clutching a paper bag with the bottleneck of a pint of cheap apple wine peeking out of the brown paper bag laying on his back in an alley next to an overflowing garbage can, Man! what a shot, I thought ! - - - I noticed just as I was about to snap that first picture, I see out of the corner of my eye, a policeman in a squad car motioning to me to come to his car - - -

He said to me: " What are you doing here ? " - - - "You don't belong here, I suggest for you to get back over in a safer part of town. "

That incident, which is as clear as it happened yesterday, makes me wonder - - - Either One, that policeman shattered my dreams of becoming a famous phographer, or two, that policeman saved my life - - - I prefer to think of it as the latter.

Here's a solution to all the controversy over full-body scanners at the airports. Even the ACLU and Nancy Pelosi would probably not object to.

Have a booth that you can step into that will NOT X-Ray you, but will detonate any explosive device you may have on you.

It would be a win-win situation for everyone, there would be none of this hassle about Racial Profiling and this method would eliminate a long and expensive trial. Justice could be quick and swift ! Case closed.

This is so simple that it's brilliant. I can see it now - - - You're in the airport terminal and you hear a muffled explosion. Shortly thereafter an announcement comes over the PA syatem - - - " Attention Standby Passengers, we NOW have a seat available on Flight Number - - - "

Man, I love it - - - Works for me!

The four cartoons here appear in the latest May-June issue of The Saturday Evening Post Magazine.

Lately, they have started to use color in their cartoons .

After receiving the four okays, they requested the finish art in color so using my trusty Corel PaintShopPro11, I colored them on the computer. I then printed 8-1/2 x11copies on Kodak heavy matte paper and mailed them out.

This Corel program is fairly easy to use and would recommend it. And although I have only mastered 10% of the commands, it seems to be enough for a computer novice like myself to do pretty neat finished color cartoons !

I used to have a guy working for me that used to love to say ( When things were going smooth and the money was steady streaming in ) - - - " YOU CAN'T LOSE WITH THE STUFF WE USE ! " - - - I love it - - -

My New Logo

This is the new logo/photo that I'll be using in all my material herewith . . . it is the old photo "TWEAKED" with new colors splashed vertically to give it a more contemporary look with an old " BROADWAY" typeface for the name imbedded . . . . a touch of the old with a touch of the new . . .

The original photo was taken by the late world-famous portrait photographer, ARTHUR TCHOLAKIAN, Armenian-American who I had the pleasure of being his friend when I had my sign company in Newington, Virginia in the early 80's . . . He was referred to me by a close friend who had just painted his new house.

Arthur had decided to move down from New York and re-establish his photography studio in nearby Wolftrap, Virginia. His many successful projects in the past consisted of beautiful award-winning photographic portfolios of the Soviet Union, Israel, Africa and several other European countries. He went on world photo assignments for Time-life and National Geographic magazine. He was truly a world-class photographer.

His first project he was planning in Virginia was a book consisting of all of the ambassador's wives in the Washington, D.C. embassies. I remember back in the early 80's his fee for a portrait was a flat $1000.00 which included pick-up at your office in a limousine, lunch and return trip to your office via limo. It took the major portion of the day.

Arthur was a genius photographer. What I did for him was a custom 3x5 ft. double-sided screenprinted nylon flag with his logo I had created and the words: Wolftrap Photography, it was a conservative 2-color flag and flew below the U.S. flag on his front lawn in nearby Reston, Virginia. I remember 'trading" services . . . his fee for a custom portrait at that time, like I said, was $1000.00.

I got the best part of the deal. The fact that Arthur took my portrait, was enough for me. To name just a very few of his portraits in his books who sat for him, were: Golda Meir, Bobby Short, Salvador Dali, Lena Horne . . . the list is endless . .

We hit off a real good close friendship, had a lot in common . . . I was looking forward to going on field trips with him and taking lessons on a single lens reflex ( SLR ) camera when all of a sudden, his wife calls me and told me the tragic news that Arthur had suddenly died, I believe from a stroke.

If you want to read a little really interesting stuff on a great American phographer, Arthur Tcholakian . . . Do yourself a favor . . . " Google" him !

I feel real lucky to have crossed paths with this creative artist with a camera !

Kentucky Derby Week

Gosh, I can't believe the last posting was April 27. It tells you where my mind was. It was on the upcoming Kentucky Derby. The Churchill Downs Event is always on the first Saturday in May . . . it has to be one of the greatest thoroughbread horse races in the world that is known as The Sport of Kings.

It is easy to see why it is called that as you mill around the beautiful fashionable women in high heels all sporting big fancy hats and lots of gentlemen showing off their white panama summer three-piece suits and just as many seer suckers and expensive sporty straw hats and puffing havanas all lined up at the 50 and 100 dollar windows . . . those lines are quite a few lines away from the two-dollar window where I was hanging around . . .

The only tip I got was from a friendly tout, A Ronald Reagan look-alike with a thin mustache wearing a brown checkered tweed sport coat and green striped pants with shifty eyes, ( THIS WAS AT ABOUT AT 11AM ) . We had bumped into each other at the Mint Julep stand.  He said, ( Out of the blue ),  "Hey,  there is a horse named ' Atta boy Roy ' . . . bet him . . . I know what I'm talkin' about . . . "  that's all I needed . . . with a name like that, I HAD to bet it !   I raced to the nearest window . . . " Atta-Boy-Roy ", That's all I kept repeating til I got in front of the man with that ticket machine ! . . I put $20.00 on him to win . . .You won't believe it, the horse went off at 20 to 1 . . . . the son-of-a-bitch didn't cross the finish line till half-past-three !

The race track officials called him a 'mudder' . . . That's what I called him when he took my money !

I went to the races with a couple of my best old childhood friends, JIM NIETO, I successful founder and President of the well-known Qualified Mechanical of Tucson AZ and RUSS DAVIS of Lexington KY, a childhood friend from the third grade in Tucson. He sold his successful independent insurance company to AAA auto club and shows up on some days of the week at his office. . . about 10 am for a few hours to take care of his old customers, etc. All three of us were from the Tucson High Class of '53.

We went to the event with a University of Arizona Alumni club group which goes every year . . it was Russell Davis' and Jim Nieto's second time . . . it was my first, but not probably my last, that, I can promise you. ( If I can only find a white pin stripe three-piece seersucker suit that fits, for next year ! )

Someone once told me, " You only go through life ONCE, but if you do it right . . . ONCE is enough ! " . . . I like that.

( The Hell with reincarnation )   I don't need two chances !

This event will be one of the highlights of my life. What a week ! Returned on Monday night about 8 pm . . . almost 3 hrs. late after failing to exit Interstate 79 at the Elkins exit and kept driving almost all the way to Fairmont, WV . . . about 30 plus exits past the one I was supposed to exit on .

I guess I was distracted reliving all the good times I'd experienced in the last 72 hours ! Man, it doesn't get any better than this . . . you can't make this stuff up. We sat next to a beautiful set of three ladies . . . The one next to me was a spittin' image of Vivian Leigh ( Blanche DuBoise ) in ' A Streetcar named Desire ' ( Seriously ). I say that as a compliment . . . the beautiful woman won an Academy Award !

She looked the part . . acted the part ! And I'm there after about a dozen mint juleps, slurring my speech . . . doing a Marlon Brando monolog from a different movie, ' On The Waterfront ' . . . " I coulda had class, I coulda been a contender . . . I coulda been somebody . . . It was YOU, Charlie, you were my big brother, you shoulda watched out for me, it was you . . . His brother, Rod Steiger turns around in the back of the cab and reminds Terry Malloy ( Marlon Brando ), " You saw some money, boy . . . "

Terry Malloy ( Marlon ) says, " You don't understand . . Remember that night you came into my dressing room in the Garden and said: " This ain't your night, we're going for the price on Wilson . . " . . .    " This ain't my night ?, I coulda taken Wilson apart . . after the third round we were just dancin' . . . I was holding him up . . . what does HE get ? . . . he gets a title-shot in the ball park . . what do I get ? A one way ticket to Palookaville ! . . . It was YOU. Charlie . . "

What a week.

I promise to have a few photos of the event in a few days once I unwind.

One of my heroes of all time. What a tactician and leader. We need a guy like this in the White House now. I'd hate to run in to this guy in an alley on a dark night.

This is a great quote to write on a piece of paper and place it above your drawing board where you can see it every day. This is the kind of attitude to be a selling cartoonist or writer.

Reminds me - - - In one of Mort Walker's early books, he spoke about while in living in New York in the early fifties pounding the streets getting started in this crazy business, he had this kind of an attitude - - - He wrote on the bathroom mirror with lipstick, a place where he would see the message every morning while shaving, the following simple statement: " I will not be denied. "

This simple story sends chills up my spine. You can't stop a man that wants to go somewhere. ( Not with an attitude like that. ) No wonder he is where he is. It doesn't surprise ME. He is one of my cartoon idols. What a role model !

This drawing came out approximately in 2006 when occasionally they would request a drawing to be finished in color. This one was rendered in color using pastel pencils, except for the yellow where I used markers.

Ever since the scaling back of costs because of diminishing paper print sales, they, like others had to cut corners so they no longer use color and do not give out tear sheets like they used to.

It's things like this that make you want to say, "remember the good old days ?"

CARLOS GENARDINI

Someone might ask, who the hell is Carlos Genardini ? I'll tell you.

Carlos Genardini was, in 1952, a forty-five-ish, well-read Gilbert Roland/Salvador Dali look-alike with greying temples.

I'm sure ole Carlos has passed by now. Carlos is stuck in my mind forever over a couple instances going way back to around 1952.

I was a teenager and got started in my field early by working after school and Saturday and sometimes on Sunday at Tucson's premier ( at that time ) all-around Sign and Display Studio, Tony Urias and Associates in Tucson, Arizona.

Christmas time was our busy season, so Mr. Urias would import from Los Angeles, California an old and talented friend to help us out for about a month or two . . . He lived and slept in the shop to save money and would pick up a nice bundle of cash to bring back to L.A..

By living in the shop, he was able to put in long hours, and since we were bulging with all types of work, he relished seeing a stack of work orders . . . and since he was multi-talented he seemed to be a man on amphetemines, never tiring . . . incessant jibbering all day long, AND into the night . . . the rumor was that he lived in a mental asylym in L.A. and was on a work-release program of some kind . . who the hell knows . . the boss would warn us before he came that try not to agitate him, and to please tolerate him because we really needed help . . . it was extremely stressfull working with this guy . . He would rant: " I am Carlos Genardini, the world's greatest all-around sign and display man, carpenter, scenic artist, sign painter, showcard writer, calligrapher, electrician, mural painter . . . you people should be glad I'm here ! - - - blah - blah - - blah . . . it would go on and on and on. ( Like this blog )

I learned a lot from Carlos, he could speak fluent Spanish, Italian and English. Although he wasn't wrapped too tight, he was one helluva talent. God Bless You, Carlos, wherever you are.

I think I have a little Carlos Genardini in me.

Here's one of my favorites that I sold to National Review magazine that I happened to run across in my files . . . I actually saw a poor sap like this at Union station in Washington, D.C. back in the '80's - - - and people ask: " Where do you get your ideas ? " . . .

I think you have to be very observant, usually the ideas are not given to you in complete form, ready to use, but by free-association, it's amazing what is actually out there floating in the ether - - - the secret is to "pluck" one going by, put it in your folder - - - and come back later to it and keep tweaking it - - many times, something comes up - - - they are out there.

This pretty much really sums it up . . .

When comes the task of writing gags for cartoons . . . which is a never-ending, on going, consistent, mind exercise, week after week, month after month, year after year . . . I think most cartoonists actually use the same methods . . . I have never heard anything new.

I would suggest to write the definition down on a piece of paper and have it close by so you see it every day. ( And remind yourself of this factual definition )

I remember years ago in the old Saturday Evening Post magazine, you could easily see a cartoon like this, poking fun at what a bad driver women were - - - it was always a woman who was a bad driver.

Men were good drivers, women were bad drivers. As long as it was the woman who was driving stupidly, it was funny - - - but put a man as the bad driver and some would say, it just isn't funny when the lousy driver is a man - - - h-m-m-n ?

It's good to be back on a pretty regular basis inside LEATHERNECK, Magazine of the Marines.

I sold my first cartoon to them while in the Marines, stationed on Okinawa in 1956, later on I ended up at Marine Barracks ( The showplace of the Corps ) in Washington D.C. and in July, 1958 I sold a double-page spread all about cartoons with the Fourth of July as a theme. Back then, they would feature one cartoonist for this regular feature and they would assign a double-truck to you. I distinctly remember, they paid $125.00 for the double-page, it wasn't bad money back then.

By the time I got to Washington, D.C., Staff-Sergeant Gordon Bess was no longer the cartoon editor and the duties had gone to a fine artist-illusrator by the name of Bill Machin, who also did some cartoons for the magazine. I remember visiting the magazine on a Saturday in person, while a Sergeant at Marine Barracks. Got to meet everybody at the magazine . . . off and on I've been a contributor and now I'm back in kinda steady or as the juices flow in that vein.

This reminds me of the legendary UCLA basketball coach, Bill Wooden. This classic sentence, I believe could have easily been penned by Mr. Wooden.

Years ago I remember seeing a TV interview of one of his great centers, Dave Meyers. Dave was replying to a question by the interviewer of how the team, almost to the last man was ALWAYS cool and calm and no matter how dire the circumstances were, the poise you saw was so admirable, almost like you were watching a movie . . . and then, just like a movie, they would make that last second steal or shot that won the game . . . and the team showed just a little enthusiasm when they would squeak by . . it was as if they KNEW what the ending was going to be.

This phenomena happened because The coach had drilled it into the player's brain, that no matter how the game ended, he told the team that when they trotted off the court, NO ONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO TELL IF UCLA WON OR IF THEY LOST by their actions or the expression on their faces !

Of course it was hard to do, but man, that's what I call classic poise . . . if you can do it.

Here is a drawing that appears on page 72 of the March 2009 issue of American Legion. Original was submitted as a black and white and as they only publish color cartoons, they requested a colored version and bingo, with my trusty Corel PaintShopPro 9 program it was quickly rendered in living color. Then I printed it on Kodak premium heavy matte photo paper and USPS mailed it.

I've upgraded and tried both PaintShopPro X AND XI, but I like the 9 version the best so I use it most of the time. Jerry King told me he likes PhotoShop 4 and now they must be way up to about 15 but if a less complicated version suits you best, use what you feel comfortable with is the name of the game I guess.

Jerry tells me also that he draws with a pencil only, and then scans it as a black and white and then you can either print it as a black and white ink drawing for submission and then since it's saved in your computer, you can retrieve it when you want to color it or give it some grey wash tones, or whatever . . .

Influence of some cartoon art from " Dada "

The following, I hope, is an attempt to explain the situation of the dilemma in trying to make sense of many of the magazine cartoon art purchases at The new Yorker magazine, since the mid-seventies. ( Serious comments, dialogue welcomed )

From Webster's New World College Dictionary ( Third edition ): The following . . .

da-da . . . Fr. lit., . . hobbyhorse, babytalk, altered ? selected by Tristan Tzara, leader of the cult, because of its resemblance of meaningless babble, as symbolic of the movement, a cult ( 1916-1922 ) in painting, sculpture, and literature characterized by fantastic, abstract, or incongrous creations, by rejection of all accepted conventions, and by nihilistic satire.

And furthermore, from Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Tenth edition, the following . . .

Da-da . . . Fr., 1919: A movement in art and literature based on deliberate irrationality and negation of traditional artistic values; also, the art and literature produced by this movement.

Gee, I wonder why the people at the New Yorker just didn't say this and tell cartoonists that they have started to look at Dadaism in their cartoon selection . . . . . way back in the 70's or when the Dadaists started to appear . . . more and more . . . I guess people were supposed to figure it out themselves . . . they could have saved themselves a lot of time because although they have never stopped some new " traditional " cartoonists to appear altogether . . . an overwhelming number of " Dada cartoonists " have continued to join the ranks of the cartoon group at The New Yorker.

I am positive that if a buyer suggested to you that they get giddy and excited over a Dada cartoon style, you would think twice before sending them your run of the mill traditional cartoon crap, instead, you would very easy to go the Dada route ( and send them some crappy Dada crap.) It would be easy.

Take a good free-throw shooter in the NBA who averages 85%, and you tell him, look, I want to hire you but you show too much skill, can you miss more shots, so you look really bad, can you do that?, huh? can you miss a few shots, huh? or is that too hard ?, huh ?, huh? . . .

( Try asking a Dada cartoonist to draw with skill, hell, it's too much work!, you're taking the FUN out of it, man . . this is ME, I'm having a ball . . . whazza matta, aren't you hip ? don't you get it ? Was Jackson Pollock nuts or are YOU nuts, don't you get it ? . . get with it. ) It's ALL a bunch of shit. Nothing matters. Read Alan Watts, and Saul Alinsky and Noam Chomsky . . . take a hit off this bong, THEN tell me my Dada cartoons stink. It's YOU, not me.

Picture it the other way around, a magazine has been buying totally 100% Dada cartoons for 50 years and then one day they tell you that they are going to start buying cartoons from cartoonists that are tradionalists . . artists that can draw with skill, and their training shows, people who take the art seriously . . . I think what would happen is more Dada cartoonists would consider jumping off bridges or go back ( or just plain go for the first time ) to art school, or maybe join The Progressive Party of politics, where it plainly shows they would feel very comfortable, or maybe move to Amsterdam or Oregon or Seattle, or look for a profession where they can "rationalize " that bad is good, down is up, Columbus was a no good rotten bastard, It's all the other greedy bastards fault, taxes are good, life owes me something, the government can solve everything, cops are bad, share the wealth ( AND the pot, why not? ) , legalize everything, if it feels good, it ought to be legal.
